The Donor Fund

The Donor Fund allows donors the opportunity to give direction to the Foundation in determining which organizations should receive support. It is an ideal giving vehicle for donors who want to avoid some of the restrictions and additional work associated with private foundations. While a donor fund shares many of the positive aspects of a private foundation, it has two distinct advantages:

  • First, there are lower costs than those associated with a private foundation.
  • Second, from the donor's perspective, they are significantly easier to establish and run once created.

Individuals who establish donor funds within the Foundation may have the privilege of recommending distributions of income and in some cases, principal. The Foundation welcomes and seriously considers each suggestion. The Board of Directors retains the ultimate authority for fund distributions, and normally approves donor recommendations for grants to qualified charities that are consistent with the broad charitable interests of the Foundation. This advisory privilege may, in some cases, be extended to members of the family and is an ideal way to maintain family involvement.
